Johnsen House

Manzanita, Oregon • 2018

This home, located on a beachfront site, has sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. The owners have vacationed in Manzanita for years, and building a home there was a long-time dream of theirs. The house is designed as a vacation home in the near term, but to serve as a full-time residence for them later in life. To address the ongoing housing shortage in the community, the downstairs is configured as a separate dwelling unit that can accommodate a long-term renter. Technical challenges included a steep slope and deteriorating retaining wall at the rear of the site, direct exposure to strong coastal winds, and building height restrictions.
