Uptegrove House

Nehalem, Oregon • 2018

The Uptegroves wanted to build a small carriage house on their riverside property, with the idea that they would live there in the early years, and as their family grew, possibly building a larger house and revert the carriage house to an auxiliary dwelling unit (ADU). The challenge for the carriage house was to create a living space that accommodated all of their current needs while working within the county’s limits for ADU size. The resulting house is compact and efficient, yet spacious feeling and filled with light. The shape of the building, the natural materials used on the exterior, and the views of the surrounding woodlands serve to tie the house into the landscape.
