Breakside Brewing

Embracing Astoria’s blossoming craft beverage scene, Breakside Brewery expands to the coast! Working on a tight timeline, we designed their new tasting room that upcycles a former grocery store into a lively indoor-outdoor space where beer drinkers can taste the wares. The space is filled with nods to Astoria’s history and community: a giant mural depicts scenery of the local Astoria landscape, and the bar is built from 180-year-old wood salvaged from the 14th Street Pier when it underwent repairs. The BREASKIDE sign on the front of the building is a nod to the Astoria Co-Op, the building’s former occupant and a beloved Astoria institution. We worked closely with the City of Astoria to streamline the land-use review and building permitting process, to accommodate the tight construction timeline while creatively solving building code complications inherited from the original building.
